About this Item

Sixth Edition. With an engraved frontispiece portrait within an architectural border. 8vo, in modern mottled calf backed marble boards sympathetic to the period, the spine with raised bands ruled in gilt and a red morocco label gilt lettered. 456pp. A fine copy. Popular school text-book, imported heavily into the American colonies and an early textbook used at Harvard. It contains a very interesting method of calculating pi. It is the first mention of teaching Euclidian geometry at Harvard, and marked the introduction of Algebra to Harvard as well. For being author of such a famous book, John Ward was an English mathematicians about whom very little is known. He was born in 1648 and died sometime around 1730. It is known that he taught mathematics in Chester. Bookseller Inventory # 27704
