About this title

A collection of short essays about nature and man in a Southern California mountain range 50 miles from San Diego. The book follows the 12 months of the year, the seasons, the wildlife, the weather, and one man's attempt to understand the mountain world. A few essays are about building a cabin under the oaks, talks with neighbors, and tramps with a wide-eyed dog.

About the Author:

Leland Fetzer taught Russian language and literature for nearly three decades. He has published three volumes of translations from Russian and articles on 19th and 20th century Russian literature, but he is proudest of an essay he wrote in 1971 on Bernard DeVoto's western origins. He lives in San Diego but spends as much time as possible at a cabin in the Cuyamaca mountains. He has recently completed a new book, The Cuyamacas, an informal history of people in a Southern California mountain range.
