Hardcover. Condition: Very Good+. Marbled paper over boards, red leather backstrip; 4to (about 7.5-by-9.5 inches); approx. pp. 119 (numbered by hand), with articles and images from numerous sources neatly mounted to the recto and verso. Boards scuffed; spine chipped and torn at tips, with gatherings exposed. Contains hundreds of articles on -- and portraits of -- authors, composers, heads of church and state, royalty, and more. This was, at some point, a ledger or journal, as patches of handwriting (numbers and letters) are sometimes visible between the articles or going to the very edge of the page. Our compiler focuses mostly on the arts, though his/her collection of articles does enjoy the occasional notice of the end of a family line ("The Last of the Carlyles") or item of broad social interest (the first female sailor in France). It features Arthur Conan Doyle, Henry Irving, H. R. H. the Prince of Wales, the King and Queen of Siam, the Bishop of Winchester, Lady Clifford, Oliver Wendell Holmes, and many more -- a spectrum of who's who, with an emphasis on the bookish. A bit stuffy, but also a bit curious -- perhaps the work of a student, an avid reader, or (maybe, just maybe) a social climber? Nice and full, almost no negative space.

  • Seller image for Photograph Album, Scrapbook, Travelogue; Documenting a cruise from May to September 1930, aboard the T. S. S. Rotterdam to England, Ireland, Norway, Holland, Austria, France, and Russia. for sale by Sanctuary Books, A.B.A.A.

Condition: Very Good+. Cloth-covered boards, 12 x 10.5 inches; contains 30 grey heavy cardstock leaves. Nicely preserves silver-gelatin photographs (in sepia and b/w, average size is 2 x 4 inches), passenger lists, postcards, telegrams, newspaper clippings, pamphlets, a few manuscript entries, and more, tipped-onto the rectos and versos of every leaf, or laid-in at rear. Boards a bit scuffed, with a scattering of tiny bleached spots. Binding a bit shaken, as expected, as the volume is near-to bursting with keepsakes and treasures. Photographs of landmarks, landscapes, streetscapes, and some wonderful images of the clothing, interior design, and cars of the period. Postcards (mostly b/w, with a few colored) include but are not limited to Stonehenge, Tunbridge Wells, Warwick Castle, Shakespeare s Birthplace, Anne Hathaway s cottage (and lovely garden), Raglan Castle, Gloucester Cathedral, Blarney Castle, a portrait of Lenin, a portrait of Stalin, The Paramount Hotel of New York City. Here and there throughout, this travelogue includes quite a few interesting pamphlets. All of them are clean and legible, though adhered to the scrapbook by their rear covers (and, as such, not removable without causing damage). They are: A guide to The Duke of Cornwall Hotel, Plymouth; The Cathedral and Metropolitical Church of Christ; Canterbury: A Handbook for Pilgrims; Guide to the High Rocks One Mile from Royal Tunbridge Wells; A Short Guide to Battle Abbey; A Catalogue of an Exhibition of Original Paintings and Drawings Made to Illustrate Books Published at the Bodley Head, (New Burlington Galleries, 1930); A guide to Compton Wynyates History of Blarney Castle; A Guide to Glebe Hotel, Lakes of Killarney, Ireland; Kate, by Mary McCartie (staple-bound illustrated wraps, printed by The Veritas Company, Dublin); The University Collection of Antiquities Short Guide-Books, I. The Oseberg-Ship and The Oseberg-Room, Oslo: A. W. Broggers, 1930; Authorised Guide to the Tower of London. The final leaf introduces a new cruise, aboard the S. S. George Washington to Hamburg, Southampton and Cherbourg, and Cobh (Queenstown), with a passenger list, menu, and one tiny photograph of the Statue of Liberty. Though no details of this journey are provided, one legend is recorded in manuscript: A one-page telling of "The Seven Sluggards in the Courtyard of the Paula Becher Modersohn House in Boettcherstrasse," in which seven brothers dig a spring because they re too lazy to fetch water from the well, build a dyke around their house because they re too lazy to fend off flood, pave a road because they d rather not dig their wagon out of the mud in general, perform any number of laborious feats so that they can enjoy their laziness in comfort. Some rather brittle newspapers, a love letter (in which a very particular engagement ring is demanded), a few stray postcards and photographs, and manuscript (see below) are laid-in at the rear. Manuscript: 5 folded leaves, comprising 17 pages. Hastily records a series of charms, spells, superstitions, and omens undated, not offering a location. "If you see leaves and dust suddenly rise in a little whorl wind, bless yourself and leave, there is a passage there (i e) the fairies are going by ".

Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Full leather (7-by-9 inches), all edges gilt, in hand-made cloth cover with calligraphic initials and floral motif embroidered on front cover; approx. pp. 200, different color papers, more than half full with autographs, prose, poems, and original artwork by numerous contributors. Cloth cover sunned along spine and edges, otherwise fine. A lovely volume. By turns funny and touching, this album compiled by Miss Elsie Nora Turner (who becomes a Mrs. along the way) includes original pen and ink drawings, watercolors, gouache, two sepia photographs (one including a very early image of a car), and 6 pages of autographs (including one with the heading, "My Wedding Day / June 9, 1909." that is signed by her 4 bridesmaids). The artwork, contributed by friends and family, is invariably adept, ranging from the formal landscape, still life, or portrait, to cartoons (a cat caught in a goldfish bowl, a flamingo at battle with a frog, a man with wings abuzz in a field of lady flowers) -- it is sometimes direct on the page, other times tipped into corner slots (and so removable). A drawing of a bridge blown up by the Boers in 1900 is amongst the artwork. Some contribute poetry, including one in defense of women, and another quotes Longfellow's "Hiawatha." The numerous autographs she collects locate most of her friends and family spread throughout England. Interestingly, we know that Miss Turner was married in 1909. There are no entries dated later than 1909, but there is a "Baby's Catechism" clipped from a newspaper and laid-in. Perhaps, by that time, the Mrs. no longer had the time necessary to compile, document, and contribute to such a careful, spirited volume.

Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Contemporary full dark green morocco, lavishly stamped in blind and gilt on boards and spine; 4to (210 x 265 mm); approx. pp. 200, nearly full with handwritten poetry and prose, original artwork, albumen photographs, and ephemera -- sometimes adhered to the page, direct on the page, or loosely inserted via corner slots. A little scuffing along spine and edges of boards, else fine. A varied collection of highly skilled original artwork, including 6 paintings en brunelle, 12 in watercolor or gouache, and 7 in black ink wash; plus 11 pencil drawings, 4 sepia albumen photographs (mounted direct to the page, ranging in size from 122x85 to 132x195 mm), about a dozen handwritten contributions of prose and poetry (including one in Spanish), and more than 50 pieces of ephemera. Decades in the making, and with contributions from numerous hands, this is a rich and remarkably accomplished volume -- one wonders if it was perhaps created by a circle of artists. Landscapes and landmarks of England appear in the original artwork (such as a finely detailed drawing of the house where Sir Isaac Newton was born) and photographs (St. Mary's Church; New College from the Gardens), as well as the ephemera (numerous engraved illustrations of castles, neatly clipped from unknown sources). Far-flung locales are also represented: View on the Medina River (pencil drawing), Martaban at Sunrise (beautiful watercolor of Burma), an architectural drawing that suggests India. Prose and poetry contributions, mostly original, offer religious sentiments, thoughts on love and friendship, and a bit of humor (in particular, a piece entitled "Georgy on Shakespeare" argues that the Bard is greatly over-rated). Ephemera includes holiday greetings, numerous illustrations extracted from unknown sources, and the occasional die-cut. Landscapes, birds, flowers -- all the hallmarks of a typical album of the period -- though this one is particularly nice.

Green cloth over flexible boards, "Photographs" stamped in gilt on upper board; 4to; approx. pp. 50, with over 100 mounted postcard-format entries, usually two per page, on both the recto and the verso. Wonderful! Easily one of the nicest albums of this kind that we have had the pleasure of cataloguing. This unique album contains more than 100 dated "diary entries" (out of chronological sequence), each one a hand-made postcard featuring original artwork (including watercolors, pencil sketches, ink drawings, both naive and accomplished), a photograph, a cyanotype, or an image cut from an unknown source (such as a newspaper or magazine). The postcards are created by numerous contributors, and their rich variety is difficult to capture, except to say that they run the gamut of human capability (the sketch artist offers an anthropomorphic chicken, the watercolor painter a peaceful landscape) and personality (sentimental, humorous, sweet, thoughtful). A short list gives you an idea: happy puppies (photograph), ladies in big dresses wading in the surf (photograph), a Rorsarch test (ink, of course), kite (ink drawing), plant specimen, baseball joke (pencil cartoon), a little bird (feather collage), 8 bars of music (ink), Jamaica Plain (cyanotype), bull fight (photograph), boats (photograph), a family portrait in the Adirondacks (photograph). Our compiler must have enlisted far-flung friends for contributions, as images and references hail from Perugia, Brooklyn, Boston, Zermatt Valley, Philadelphia, Avignon, and Arizona.

  • Seller image for [Album amicorum of a Miss van Boetzelaer (?)].Heerenveen, 1831-1849. Oblong 4to. Manuscript with many contributions in French and English, a single contribution in Dutch and a four-line verse in German, mainly written in the same hand, probably of the owner of this album. With 45 mounted or occasionally loosely inserted drawings, paintings and prints in various formats, some coloured by contemporary hands. Contemporary gold- and blind-tooled brown morocco, each board richly decorated with frames and an oblong lozenge-shaped centrepiece, gilt edges. for sale by ASHER Rare Books

[96] ll.A beautiful example of a richly decorated and illustrated album amicorum, a book of poetry and a scrapbook in one. Alba amicorum were a popular and pleasant pastime at this time, as the first sentence of the album immediately makes clear: "Albums are all the rage, and scrap-books too". Although the album contains many poems by various poets, possibly mostly copied by the owner of the album herself, a girl from a noble family, probably Miss van Boetzelaer (?), the album also contains many contributions by others, particularly women. Examples are F. Testa, Adèle B., J. van Winter, H.v.W., A. van der Goes, H.G. v.d. G., J.C. van Beresteyn, H.J.B., C.B., A. de Schwartzenberg et Hohenlansberg, H. Repelaer van Driel, A.G. v. B. en A. de la B. The contributors probably made the drawings and watercolours to accompany their written entries and the owner mounted them in the album herself. Some of the most remarkable among the richly illustrated contributions are a loosely inserted mountain landscape in watercolour by Johannes van Ravenswaay (1815-1849), a bouquet with flowers in gouache by Wilhelma van Boetzelaer (an English teacher at the royal military academy at Breda) and another bouquet by A.J. Taets d'Amerongen née de Boetzelaer. Another beautiful drawing of three hummingbirds is executed in gouache and decorated with gold by Suzette van B., who wrote several contributions for this album. Also beautiful are a still life with fruits drawn by Mimi Stratenus, two gouaches of butterflies on pith paper by C. Bicker Borski and Christine van Berestyn, and gouache paintings of a rose by Elisa Hanbury and a butterfly by Dorothée Palland Sandberg. Also mounted in this album are engraved portraits of William Shakespeare (1564-1616) and Pierre Corneille (1606-1684), probably reflecting the poetic tastes of the album s owner. This album is not only a beautiful example of the alba amicorum culture among noble women, which flourished for centuries, but also a book for a woman made primarily by women, reflecting an important part of the culture of noble women in the first half of the 19th century. Some occasional spotting and browning, and the large number of insertions has overfilled the binding, so that it bulges slightly , but otherwise in good condition. A very interesting album amicorum with many contributions, drawings and prints by women, in a beautiful contemporary binding.
