Cloth. Condition: Near fine. Dust Jacket Condition: good. Inscribed to Congressman Nicholas Longworth and his wife, Alice Roosevelt Longworth, New Edition of The Need of Change by Julian Street. (illustrator). New Edition. Octavo, 79pp. Red cloth, title stamped in black. Originally published in 1909, this reissued volume was published in 1924. Clean text throughout, sound text block. In the publisher's dust jacket, loss at spine, closed tears to both covers. Includes laid-in photograph. Inscription reads: "For Senator & Mrs. Longworth, a piece of fooling, written fifteen years ago - Julian Street. Washington, April, 1924." The author of this book, Julian Leonard Street (1878-1947), was an American writer and reporter for the New York Mail and Express. The recipient, Speaker of the House Nicholas Longworth (1869-1931), served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1903-1913 and 1915-1931. The inscription to "Senator Longworth" may have been an error, since Longworth was a congressman at the time of this dedication. Nicholas Longworth married Alice Lee Roosevelt, the daughter of Theodore Roosevelt, in 1906. He died unexpectedly in 1931, while serving as Speaker of the House.

Hardcover. Condition: Very good +. First Edition. Octavo, 355pp., illustrated. A crisp, clean, very good or better copy in the publisher's reddish cloth, stamped in gilt. Spine gently faded, and the gilt smomewhat darkened and dust-soiled, else a sharp, clean copy, lacking the dust jacket. This copy SIGNED and quite warmly INSCRIBED by Longworth on the front free endpaper to Francis Kettaneh, a Lebanese-American businessman and close friend of the Roosevelt family: "To Francis Kettaneh - with warm regards from a member of the family that counts him as one of its most valued friends. Alice Roosevelt Longworth." Longworth's autobiography is uncommon signed, particularly with such a lengthy inscription. Kettaneh was a noted bibliophile, and his handsome gilt-stamped leather bookplate is tipped onto a front blank.
