Published by William Anderson, 1817
Seller: Riverby Books, Fredericksburg, VA, U.S.A.
Hardcover. Condition: Poor. Two volumes. Oversized hardcovers. Brown paper over boards with green paper over spines. Title plates with black lettering to spines. Both volumes dated 1817 on title pages. 616 and 586 pages, respectively. Poor condition. Bindings cracked at gutters, paper over spine coming apart and chipped. A crude repair attempted with tape (not by me!). Corners bumped, exposing boards. Text blocks are intact, though, and pages are clean but toned. Uncut pages. Former owner's name on front free end pages. A rare version, titled in full: "The Lockhart Papers: containing memoirs and commentaries upon the affairs of Scotland from 1702 to 1715, by George Lockhart, esq. of Carnwath, his secret correspondence with the son of King James the Second from 1718 to 1728, and his other political writings; also, journals and memoirs of the young pretender's expedition in 1745, by highland officers in his army. Published from original manuscripts in the possession of Anthony Aufrere, esq. of Hoveton, Norfolk." Please e-mail us with questions or to request photos. This is an oversized book. Good, torn blue wrappers over boards, spines cracked. Some foxing. 2 vol. large paper set, untrimmed: xvi (pedigree, p. v), 616; xvi, 586 p.; 29.5 cm. Very full Contents included in each volume [balance of title] containing, Memoirs and Commentaries upon the Affairs of Scotland from 1702 to 1715, by George Lockhart, Esq. of Carnwath, His secret correspondence with the son of King James the Second from 1718 to 1728, And his other political Writings; Also, Journals and Memoirs of the Young Pretender's Expedition in 1745, by Highland Officers in his Army / published from original manuscripts in the possession of [and edited by] Anthony Aufrere, Esq. of Hoveton, Norfolk. -- `In the year 1714 the "Memoirs concerning the affairs of Scotland" were published without the consent of the writer, Mr. Lockhart, who had himself acted a conspicuous part in the Pretender's service. Lockhart lent the manuscript to a friend, under a strict injunction not to let it be seen. This friend, however, was so imprudent as to employ some one to transcribe it: and this individual gave a copy to a second party, by whom it was published, with a preface written by Sir David Dalrymple. It is scarcely possible to conceive, that the writer of this extract did not know, that the ms. had been treacherously given to the public, though he avers that one of the transcribers had done it in consequence of being inadequately rewarded for his labour. But the propagation of the falsehood served a party purpose, which was precisely the aim of the writer.' (Lathbury, A history of the Nonjurors, p. 243 f.) -- `His `Papers on the Affairs of Scotland,' the most valuable sources of the history of the Jacobite movement, apppeared 1817.' (Concise DNB; see Davies-Keeler, Bibliography of British history, Stuart period no. 3738). Binding is Hardcover.
