" The sentence was full of special meaning in the rich and varied career of Blessed Peter Favre, for the first companion and intimate of St. Ignatius travelled over practically all of western and southern Europe, preaching the kingdom of God, helping to lay the foundations of one of the strongest religious orders in the Church. A Savoyard by birth, Peter took his licentiate in arts at the College Sainte Barbe in Paris, where he became acquainted with the Navarrese Francis Xavier and a student from Salamanca, Ignatius Loyola. Peter was for a time undecided about his vocation, but eventually threw in his lot with Ignatius and was ordained in 1534. On August 15 of the same year he celebrated the famous Mass at Montmartre at which the seven first Jesuits took their vows. Twelve years of almost ceaseless travel began shortly thereafter. First there was Rome, followed by journeys into northern Italy, the Netherlands, Portugal, into Spain twice and into Germany ~ tormented by religious strife ~ fully three times. In the course of his fruitful apostolate, Peter Favre, among other things, attended the Diet of Worms, where he disputed with Lutheran theologians Bucer and Melanchthon, and served as spiritual director for Peter Canisius and Francis Borgia. Everywhere this contemplative in action preached with the happiest results; his saintly personality and teaching helped to change the hearts of men and to win them to the love of God. Peter died in Rome in 1546 enroute to the Council of Trent to serve as Pope Paul lll's personal theologian. He was beatified in 1872. Early Jesuit writings almost always linked the name of Peter Favre with those of Francis Xavier and Ignatius Loyola. Later biographers, however, have somewhat neglected Peter Favre, with the result that the significant role he played in the formative years of the Society of Jesus has become obscured. Father William V. Bangert restores a lost perspective with this entirely new, extremely readable biography of Blessed Peter ~ the first modern life available in English. Jacket illustration: The engraving shows the first Jesuits making their vows at Mass in Paris in 1534; Blessed Peter Favre is the celebrant. Originally published in Antwerp in 1610 in a biography of Ignatius with illustrations, this engraving is historically incorrect as to the number and age of the companions.

Condition: New.
