Book
Hardcover. Condition: Collectible-Very Good. Cloth. Dust wrapper. Illustrations. 550 copies printed by Andrew Hoyem. In the Foreword mention is made of the number of journals kept by those travelling from the East coast to California; some journals were maintained for the entire trip, others o nly for a short time, but they reflected "the personality, interests, and experiences of the writer". Joseph Perkins Beach's Cape Horn journal has elements of significance. His "father owned the ship and that he served as supercargo and captain's cl erk placed him in an important position aboard Apollo". "Since Beach was responsible in part for the sale of the cargo after Apollo reached San Francisco, his account of the last months of 1849 when the cargo was being landed and disposed of is part icularly interesting".
