Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. TEMALPAKH (FROM THE EARTH): CAHUILLA INDIAN KNOWLEDGE AND USAGE OF PLANTS, Lowell John Bean and Katherine Siva Saubel, softcover, illustrated with photos, 1972. BOOK CONDITION: Very Good. The text block and illustrations are in near fine condition with no dog ears, marks, or tears. There is no bookplate nor signature of a prior owner. This is not a library book but the bookseller?s stamp on the top edge may indicate a remainder. The wraps are in very good condition (some puckering along the spine). 9 x 6, 225 pages, 16 ounces XX (From the back cover) TEMALPAKH (FROM THE EARTH) represents more than ten years of meticulous field work and collaboration by the authors on knowledge and usage of plants among the Cahuilla Indians. The work extends our understanding of Cahuilla use of plants far beyond the scope encompassed by David Prescott Barrows in his pioneer monograph Ethno-botany of the Coahuilla Indians of Southern California, published in 1900. The studies of Bean and Saubel reveal the high degree of sophisticated knowledge possessed by the Cahuilla concerning plant life, suggest the acuteness of their ecological awareness, and have implications of considerable significance for southern California Indian research as a whole. This new ethnobotany for the Cahuilla covers more than 250 plants and the often fascinating ways in which they were utilized. Additional supplementary material examines the controversial issue of aboriginal agriculture in southern California. Indian people, laymen, and scholars may all profit from and enjoy reading a book that is certain to become a classic in its field. LOWELL JOHN BEAN is an associate professor of anthropology at California State University at Hayward, California. He received his Ph.D. in 1970 at the University of California, Los Angeles. He is the author of Mukat's People, published by the University of California Press in 1972, and was the co-author with William Marvin Mason of Diaries & Accounts of the Romero Expeditions in Arizona and California, 1823-1826, published in 1962. He was recently the recipient of a post-doctoral museum research fellowship from the Wenner-Gren Foundation for Anthropological Research, and is a member of the Board of Directors at Malki Museum and a contributing editor to The Indian Historian. Bean has conducted research among the Cahuilla, Luiseño, Serrano, and Pomo Indian groups. KATHERINE SIVA SAUBEL is a member of the tribal council of Los Coyotes Reservation. She was one of the founders of Malki Museum and has served as its president since 1966. An authority on the traditions and culture of her people, the Cahuilla, Mrs. Saubel has lectured widely, including at the University of California, Los Angeles, at California State University, Hayward, and at the University of Cologne, Germany, where she conducted seminars for anthropology students in 1971. She has published in The Indian Historian and is the co-author with Bean of articles on the aboriginal uses of oak, mesquite, and screwbean. She has worked for many years with the German linguist Hansjakob Seiler on studies of the Cahuilla language.
