This book was created by the Caxton Club in the tradition of Middleton's fine letterpress work. It is composed in Monotype Bembo, printed from metal type at Heritage Printers in Charlotte, NC. The chapter headings and display matter are set in Eusebius (Middlteon's design) and printed from the Ludlow castings. It is illustrated with examples of Middleton's types, and contains a special offset section showing examples of his books and portfolios, wood engravings, glass engraving and paste-papers. There are photos illustrating his method of punch cutting and matrix making, and views of his famous Cherryburn Press. Robert Hunter Middleton (1898-1985) was an American book designer, painter, and type designer. Born in Glasgow, Scotland he came to Chicago in 1908 where he studied at the School of the Art Institute. He joined the design department of the Ludlow Typograph Company in 1923 and served as director of the department of typeface design from 1933 71. In 1944 he began operating a private press, The Cherryburn Press. Middleton was founder of The Typographic Society, a member of the New Bauhaus, and a founder of the Twenty-Seven Designers. .
