In the Spanish American War, declared in 1898 by President McKinley, 12 New York regiments were chosen for service: the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 8th, 9th, 12th, 13th, 14th, 47th, 65th, 69th, and 71st New York Volunteer Infantry Regiments. All of these regiments were formerly National Guard units. Silas W. Burt, author of the second work on the Civil War, was appointed auditor of military accounts for the raising of troops in New York for the duration of the war. In his memoir he describes his duties on Governor Morgan's war staff. New York ranked first in population and resources available for the war effort; it furnished the most men and suffered the heaviest losses. Two separate titles bound together; one of the Annual Report of the State Historian series. 8vo, 429pp, folding plate, Index of the Regiments, General Index; 192pp, illustrations, Index. Original red gilt cloth covers, with the gilt seal of New York at the front cover. Gilt title faded at spine; inner hinges cracked, loose in boards, title page of first title loose, last 2 leaves of second title loose.
