Sa capitale est la ville de Kuantan, située sur la côte est de la mer de Chine méridionale. - Le nom de Pahang est attesté dès le XIVe siècle après J.-C. Le Nagarakertagama, poème épique écrit en 1365 sous le règne du roi Hayam Wuruk (1350-89) de Majapahit dans l'Est de l'île indonésienne de Java, dresse une liste des contrées tributaires de Majapahit qui va de Pahang à Gurun dans les Moluques, en passant par Malayu (Jambi) à Sumatra et Bakulapura à Bornéo. En réalité, le territoire contrôlé par Majapahit ne s'étendait que sur une partie de l'Est et du centre de Java. Les contrées tributaires étaient en fait des comptoirs formant un réseau commercial dont Majapahit était le centre. Majapahit y envoyait des dignitaires dont le rôle était de s'assurer que ces comptoirs ne s'adonnaient pas à un commerce privé qui échapperait au royaume.
