Book First Edition
Contemporary Half Leather H/B. Condition: Good to Very Good - See Descri. First Edition. 1832. First edition (volume 2 only). viii, 464pp. and, as a frontispiece, a folding plan of a project for saving St. Petersburgh from flooding. Charles Colville Frankland (1792-1876) was a captain and later an admiral in the Royal Navy. In 1827 he travelled from Vienna to the Southeastern Europe and the East in 1827, and published an account of these travels in 1829. He subsequently travelled through Russia and Sweden, in 1830 and 1831, and the book for sale is the second volume of his account of this expedition. As in his earlier work, it is written in the form of a travel journal and also contains much historical information. The book is bound in contemporary half leather boards with gold titling on the spine. The case of the book is sound, although the leather that was originally on the front corners and top rear corner is now missing. In addition, the original marbled paper on the boards is also missingand the boards are now plain. The spine is in very good condition with some expected scuffing to the leather but without splitting on the spine edges. The contents are tight and clean apart from a few marks from finger smudges. There is some foxing on the folding plan and the front and rear endpapers are heavily damp stained. A name and reference number has been written on the front fixed endpaper.
