First Edition
First edition, first printing Good pictorial stiff wraps. From the library of the poet and activist, Janine Pommy Vega. Has become quite scarce. A bilingual edition. This was gifted by the San Francisco street poet extraodinaire and friend, Max Schwartz, who was born in Brooklyn and died in 2012 at age 71. Among his many accomplishments, he was roommaes with Jim Morrison in college well known in the poetry scene on the east and west coast. His affectionate and long inscription fills up the opening flyleaf in bold red pen to poet Janine Pommy Vega. After his first meeting with Janine, Schwartz went out and immediately bought this book for her. A wonderful association copy between two street savvy poets. Janine Pommy Vega has tipped over a few top corners of favorite poems. Otto Rene Castillo was burned at the stake on March 19, 1967 in the remote highlands of Guatemala by the Guatemalan Army. "Castillo met with dignity the prescribed fate of captured Guerrillas of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Guatemala. After years of agitation and exile, he had entered into armed struggle, convinced that it was the only way to liberate his country from a tragic history of oppression and genocide" as written by Francisco X. Alarcon.
