Book
Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. Third Printing 1968. An 88 page booklet with considerable black & white illustration. The back cover of the work has several small smudge marks and the spine has a light crease. Interior of book appears clean & binding is tight. No underlining, no highlighting, no bookplates, no owner names, not ex-libris, no folded or dogeared pages. The principal purpose of this work is the publication of the reminiscences of Charles Sherod "Ted" Smallwood, a Chokoloskee pioneer. The occasion for the publication is the opening of a road from the mainland at Everglades to Chokoloskee Island. This event definitely marks the end of an era in the life of the islanders. A quite presentable copy; available for immediate shipment, carefully packed!.

Octavo, paperbound (stiff tan wrappers), 88 pp. Illustrated with black & white photographs. Near Fine. In lower Collier County, south of the Tamiami Trail at the end of the State Road 29 lies a fascinating segment of the Florida Frontier. Seminole indians called the region Chokoloskee, meaning old house, but no legend survives to relate the reason for the name. Long time residents pronounce it "Chuck-aluskee" which is closer to the Indian name than the modern spelling suggests. Chokoloskee now denotes only the island in lower Chokoloskee Bay and the settlement on the island. But until about 1900 it was the name given to the entire region touching on the bay of that name. This bay is a shallow inland sea almost ten miles in length and less than two miles wide lying roughly southeast to northwest along the shore of the mainland, nowhere more than five feet deep. A strong northwest wind at low tide may blow almost all the water out of the bay so that only the smallest boats can make their way across it. A protecting fringe of the Ten Thousand Islands screens the bay from the Gulf of Mexico and a channel dredged across the upper end provides access to Barron River and the City of Everglades for boats of heavier draft. A deeper natural channel southeast of Chokoloskee Island makes it possible for larger boats to come near to the island. Florida, Floridiana, Florida History, Americana, U.S.-iana. yslic.
