First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. In the Shadow of the Alamo, and Other Texas Tales by Clara Driscoll was published by The Knickerbocker Press, New York, in association with G. P. Putnam's Sons, New York & London, in 1906. Not an ex-library copy, this 108-year-old, 5 1/2" X 8", 205-page, believed-to-be First Edition offering is in G+ condition. At age 108, this offering is still in surprisingly firm, sound physical shape from its front, ORIGINAL COVER BOARD to its ORIGINAL, rear mate. There is rather slight shelf wear at top and bottom edges of volume's spine, and modest yellowing of front and back endpapers as well as text's pages. A brief gift inscription is seen in the middle-third portion of the front loose end page(dated June 24, 1910). The string-type method of binding is in use here; some slight separation is observed between pages 144-45, 160-61, and 176-77. From "The Custodian of the Alamo", pages 3-5, "More than two hundred years ago Spanish missionaries built a chain of fortress-churches stretching from the Sabine to the Rio Grande. Today these churches are ruins. Out of the chaos of crumbling stone, rusting iron, fading colors, and defaced carvings stands one picturesque edifice, grim, sinister, silent, marked by the scars of battle and stained with the blood of brave souls who fought and died in its defense. It is the shrine of Texas independence and glory, the most conspicuous monument left to the memory of her brave and heroic sons. .This crumbling ruin is the chapel of the Mission of San Antonio de Valero, named the Alamo--the Spanish for cottonwood--from the trees along the river bank and acequia. First established on the Rio Grande in 1700, the Mission was removed to San Antonio in 1718, and to the spot on which it now stands in 1744. The fall of the Alamo occurred March 6, 1836." So begins the first, and feature, story of this collection of 7 tales, retold lovingly, but also with truth and, sometimes, surprising frankness and passion, by an obviously ardent admirer of the Lone Star State. Among the remaining stories are "Sister Genevieve", "The Old Priest of San Francisco de la Espada", "Tommy Huntress", and "Phillipa, the Chili Queen". Seen throughout the book are nearly 40 beautifully rendered black and white drawings of smallish size, as opposed to the full page, charming Frontispiece of a priest, arms folded, walking away from his parish--all of same the work of one Florence Eagar. This offering is a must have for devoted Texans, and for all others who just wish they were. Thank you!!.
