Hardcover. A saccharine gift-book from late 19thC in great shape. Now to find a worthy recipient! 508p., illustrated with five fullpage steel engravings tissue-guarded (children, Bethlehem) in pristine shape, plus perhaps the same number of worn wood-engravings of sites. Hardbound in beveled brown cloth boards decorated and ruled gilt and black, textblock with all edges gilt, gilt still bright. Hinges perfectly sound, expect some flecking of paperstock, probably from impurities in paper manufacture. Casing is slightly edgeworn, mild crimps to top and tail rims, a very good copy. Some stories retail despair and failure, but not many, and these miseries are business-related or are character flaws.

508 pp. 15.5 x 22.8 cm Red cloth on board, with gold and black printing. Steel engravings. Minor wear to heel and toe of spine. Very good. This book is an excellent illustration of the Victorian home-book. It lays out a stern, severe message of duties for family members, with a strong religious overtone. Frontispiece "The Mother's Grave" sets the dour, stern tone for this book.

How many sweet memories of by-gone days it recalls to mind, by which the heart is cheered, and the spirits enlivened amid the darkest hours of life's chequered scenes.
