Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. First Edition First Printing. Revisits the legend of the "Lost Colony" & ponders the fate of the first white child born in America, Virginia Dare, whom legend says grew up & was transformed by the sorcery of a rejected lover into a white doe fated to roam the island until she found love again. It was also the site of the first baptism, of little Virginia & Manteo, a local Indian chief. An historical introduction praises the colonization by Sir Walter Raleigh of Roanoke Island, off the coast of what was then called Virginia, now part of North Carolina. Discussion then shifts to focus on the merits of this land to the cultivation of grapes & the establishment of some of the first vineyards in this new world. Indeed, the book bears the stamp on the ffep "Compliments of Garrett & Co., Weldon, Medoc, and Tokay Vineyards, N.C., Norfolk, VA. and St. Louis MO." A fascinating little volume which incorporates a still-unsolved mystery, Native-American lore, & a history of viniculture in the American colonies. A FIRST EDITION, first printing, from 1901, dedicated to the National Society of Colonial Dames of America (the author, a NC native, was herself an ardent clubwoman), in 89 pages + Frontispiece from an original drawing of the "beautiful white maiden" by May Louise Barrett (1901) + 10 additional plates containing maps & illustrations reproduced from Theodore de Bry's edition (1590) of "The True Pictures and Fashions of the People in that Parte of American Now called Virginia." . Hardcover 12mo (5" x 7.5") is in VG condition: quite clean & bright, with random smudges & scattered small, light stains. Binding strong & straight, hinges secure. Pages modestly tanned but completely unmarked save for former owner's names & date (1904) & description of provenance to verso of frontis. Mild rubbing to extremities, heavier at both ends of spine & all corners, with a bit of fraying. No DJ, as issued.
