Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: acceptable. 1st ed. Original brown cloth, gilt spine and tooled boards. 234pp. Foxing & staining to pages, leaves laid in. Corner stain to first few pages, else fair-good. A rare Universalist tract by Michigan Rev. Russell Tomlinson and Rev. Daniel Parker a Massachusetts Universalist minister, defending Universalism against charges of licentiousness and ungodliness from evangelists, for refuting the powers of hell. Mudslinging and refutations are documented packed into its 235 pages. In his subsequent work "Proof-texts of endless punishment, examined and explained" Reverend Livermore writes a challenging and informed explication of the biblical passage on "endless punishment" (Matt xxv.46) that drove the power of mainline churches to instill fear and obedience in the populace. Livermore was married to the powerful Universalist suffragette and reformer, Mary Ashton Rice Livermore whose political and religious work and writings were profoundly influential to their times.
