Hardcover. Condition: Poor. Top corner of front flyleaf has former ownership signature "Alice H. Sherwood, Auburn, R.I., July 16, 1899." Spine cloth is gone, with spine lining stained; binding is very worn; corners bumped and worn; hinges are broken; free front endpaper and page groupings at front and back are loose, present; many margins (and some edges of the text) have closed tears and/or chips and/or soil; as a small part of the bottom corner of one leaf was apparently torn out, a photocopy of the missing text was laid onto the corner of that leaf (not a very pretty restoration job, but functional); pages and plates at back are dampstained; reading copy only. The double chromolithograph at front and title page are present, followed by pages [i]-x, 33-503, with in-text illustrations, the aforementioned double chromolithograph, and 96 p. of black and white plates, present and accounted for (as for the text and table of contents beginning with p. 33, which is how the book was published, I suspect that two of the 16-p. groupings of plates were originally slated to be bound in before the first page of text (and be counted as pages), but that plan changed and the pagination was never corrected; also, if you count the double chromo as 2 p. of plates, there are a total of 98 p. of plates, making the title-page claim, "Magnificently illustrated with over 100 full-page engravings" another inaccuracy). Large, heavy volume [otob: 41 (ck 43)].
