In 1759, the Qianlong Emperor commissioned a work entitled Huangchao liqi tushi, a comprehensive illustrated catalogue of the ceremonial garments and accessories worn by the imperial household. Every detail of court dress including colour, design, and insignia was prescribed by these sumptuary regulations. IMPERIAL WARDROBE looks at the court costume of the late Qing period in the light of Huangchao liqi tushi and presents concise descriptions of every garment in the official wardrobe, placing them within the historical and cultural context of the time. The chapters relating to individual items of dress, as much as possible, follow the order of the official regulations themselves. The text is supported by extensive colour illustrations of surviving examples of court dress, drawn from both private and public collections, as well as contemporary portraits from the period. For ease of reference, much of the detailed costume information has also been given in tabular form. A glossary of Chinese terms used throughout the book has also been included. IMPERIAL WARDROBE will prove to be an ideal reference book for the collector of court costume, and will provide an excellent introduction to the topic for students of fashion and textile design and all those with a general interest in Far Eastern art.
