Paperback. First edition. 289pp. Octavo [23 cm] Illustrated wrappers. Fine. New book. Signed by the author on the title page. Like The Perfect Storm on a white water river, or Into the Wild in the depths of Grand Canyon, this adventure / mystery / biography details the true story of Glen and Bessie Hyde, who vanished on their 1928 honeymoon river trip through Grand Canyon. When they did not appear at journey's end, Glen's father launched an exhaustive search of Grand Canyon. Although the boat was soon found upright and fully loaded, no trace of the honeymooners was ever found. They had vanished from the face of the earth. Or had they? In the fall of 1971, an elderly widow joined a Grand Canyon rafting tour. Toward the end of the trip she announced she was Bessie Hyde, and that she had killed her husband, hiked out and started life anew. In 1976 a skeleton with a bullet in the skull was found at the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. Its size, age, and accouterments all looked suspiciously like Glen Hyde's. In the following twenty years, yet another man and woman came to light, each surrounded by bizarre coincidences and suspected by some to be Glen or Bessie Hyde.

First Edition
First Edition. 456pp. Octavo [23.5 cm] Tan cloth with the title stamped in red on the backstrip. Near fine/Near fine. Map endsheets and pastedowns. Bookplate on the front pastedown. Bert Loper was born in 1869 the very day that Major John Wesley Powell discovered the confluence of the San Juan and Colorado Rivers. Loper spent much of his life devoted to those two streams. But it was never easy. Orphaned and abused, Loper worked most of his life at the very bottom, the nameless grunt in hard rock mines, the sore-backed shoveler on a placer bar, the subsistence rancher on a lonely gravel delta in Glen Canyon. Whatever Loper got, he got the very hard way. But on the muddy whitewater streams of the Southwest, Loper found a joy, a thrill, and a peace. By the time he died at his oars in a Grand Canyon rapid at eighty, he had covered more river, run more boats, and known more rivermen than anyone. Two weeks before he vanished in the Colorado, the very first motorboat had run Grand Canyon--bookending Loper's incredible career.

First Edition
First edition. First edition. 8vo. Author's first book. Red cloth, titles and decoration stamped in gilt on the front cover and spine, maps on front and rear endpapers, xii [2], 288 pp., preface, illustrated from photographs, maps, glossary, acknowledgments, index. "Glen and Bessie Hyde began their honeymoon trip down the Green and Colorado Rivers on October 20, 1928. A month later they hiked to the rim of Grand Canyon, resupplied, and returned to their boat. When they did not arrive at trip?s end, Glen's father launched and exhaustive search of lower Grand Canyon. The Hydes' crude Idaho sweep scow was found in calm water, fully loaded. Both Glen and Bessie had vanished without a trace. So began the greatest mystery in the annals of whitewater navigation. More than forty years later, in 1971, an older woman on a Grand Canyon river trip announced she was Bessie Hyde. She said she had stabbed Glen, hiked out, and started life anew. In 1976 a skeleton thought to be Glen Hyde's was found at the canyon rim with a bullet in the skull. Since then, another suspected Glen and another Bessie have appeared, further convoluting the myth of the Hydes. Author and boatman Brad Dimock searched the country for the true story of the Hydes. He followed each story and obscure lead to its end, even going to the extreme or recreating the Hydes' archaic craft for a harrowing trip through Grand Canyon with his own bride. Sunk Without a Sound is the riveting tale of the search for Glen and Bessie Hyde." -- back panel of dust jacket. Author Tony Hillerman says "A damned good book. Hard to put down." Fine, bright and unread copy in dust jacket.
