Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. First Edition. Complete. A comfortably owned copy of this cheerful, cheeky morale-booster hailing from the Seige of Ladysmith. 18 humorous chromolithographic sketches with captions on the opposite leaves, original green cloth back and white pictorial paper covered boards which are soiled and worn around the edges. The drawings were executed between November 2, 1899, and February 28, 1900, and form an interesting "souvenir of a somewhat trying four months spent together in a beleaguered town, borne cheerfully by soldiers and civilians alike for the sake of the Empire." The boards have much wear, marking, scuffing about. The spine has wear and handling marks. However, the boards are also benign, affable. The contents have marks from age and handling, wear all about. Nonethless, they are contented, secure, convivial, companionable, clear, utterly engaging with humour, charm, spirit. fk r*17/01/2022. [Ak].
