Original red cloth boards, richly decorated with black and gilt tooling (designed by H W Troy), bevelled edges, pictorial two-tone endpapers, tissue-guarded engraved frontispiece & profusely illustrated throughout. Both volumes heavily rubbed at edges and joints, with some fraying; volume two is a little faded and marked. Front free endpaper paper creased in volume one. Previous owner's inscription, dated 1882, on title page in both volumes. Binding weakened by still holding firm. Still attractive. These two volumes contain 12 issues of the monthly St Nicholas Illustrated Magazine which in turn contained some of the finest writing, illustrations and amusements (how to guides, puzzles, games etc) for children. These volumes contain works by William Wordsworth, Louisa M Alcott (An Old-Fashioned Thanksgiving) and many others.
