First Edition
8vo. [4], iv, 95 pp., plus 7 pp. publisher's illustrated ads. Frontisp. photo, numerous photo plates, strip maps. Pictorial tan publisher's cloth, illustration on front cover of Maori standing beside the river, lettering & decoration in black & red (minor soiling, edgewear, offset toning to endpapers), still VG copy. First edition of this surprisingly scarce guide to the Wanganui River, people, and natural history for travels down the Whanganui River, the third-longest river in New Zealand. Prior to the completion of the North Island Main Trunk Railway, the river was a aital link for the effort, with steamships regularly running its' length, whose rugged beauty and the Maori villages (Kainga) dotting the banks attraced thousands of tourists annually. Downes (d. 1938) was appointed the Supervisor of River Works and Ranger for Domain Lands for the Wanganui River Trust in 1921, and traveled the length of the river repeatedly.
