History of the Non-Co-operation and Khilafat Movements in the North-West Frontier Province. Biographical notes. Chronology. Index. "This book brings together an important collection of documents that have not been used before by the historians of the Khilafat and Non-Cooperation Movements. The political historian of the twentieth century is familiar with the major actors operating on the national scene. These reports, hitherto unpublished, reveal the role of local and regional leaders, their linkages, strategies and techniques of mobilization. Likewise, there exists much secondary literature on the mobilization conducted, say by M.K. Gandhi, Maulana Abdul Bari, Maulana Abul Kalam Azad or the Ali brothers. These documents, on the other hand, reveal, perhaps for the first time in such detail, the mobilization processes in the localities. There is, consequently, much that is new in them. This work makes an important statement on a vital phase in India's encounter with British colonialism. Though written for the officials, the reports unwittingly reveal the depth of the agitation against the government. Finally, as a source book, we are introduced to many facets of the Khilafat and Non-Cooperation Movements. With detailed biographical notes, the editors have placed Regionalizing Pan-Islamism in its context and made it accessible to modern readers.".

From the time of the Tanzimat, the rise of the west was closely scrutinized and interpreted in multiple ways until Mustafa Kemal Pasha's, major and decisive project of westernization triggered more intensive debates. These continue to figure in Turkey's public discourses. In the eight lectures delivered at Jamia, Halide' Edib expounds the idea of the east and west with utmost clarity. Her intervention evoked responses from, among others, Mahatma Gandhi, Bhagwan Das, M.A. Ansari and Mohammad Iqbal.

Hardcover. Condition: As New. 1st Edition. The nature of Muslim knowledge concerning the West through travel accounts makes for fascinating reading. The eighteenth-century encounters of Munshi Ihtisamuddin and Mirza Abu Taleb Khan, embedded in their travelogues, however, seem very distant and less urgent. With Syed Ahmed, however, begins an entirely new phase with his interplay between Muslims and the West, on the one hand, and between Islam and Christianity, on the other. Even though his portrait of England is sometimes facile, his account of his travels opens the door to new questions, particularly because this was the period when the relations between Europeans and Indians were at the centre of many debates. Consequently, passages in the Musafiran-i Landan introducing 'Europe' and 'England' are historically important enough to merit attention, since they are not used merely as fulsome descriptions of Western society's advances, but also contain the germ of the justification for an Anglo-Muslim rapprochement. This makes the Musafiran-i Landan an important source for the construction of the history of an era. Its English translation, the first ever to be undertaken in full, makes it accessible to those who have no knowledge of Urdu. Although several accounts of 'India and West' are available, A Voyage to Modernism is of special significance. Set apart from his later endeavours like the Tahzibul Akhlaq and Asar-al Sanadid, it is the Syed's impressions caught in A Voyage to Modernism that mattered to all those who knew anything about his standing in public life and his stature as an enlightened reformer in the last quarter of the nineteenth century. This eminently readable translation is enriched by editorial interventions by translators and editors of the work, and supported by rare archival photographs.

Hardcover. Condition: As New. Dust Jacket Condition: As New. 1st Edition. From the Editor's Note: The first Indian National Congress was held in 1885, one year after the Marquess of Ripon left India : in that world of high mortality among political parties, for India's Congress party to have survived for a century is in itself no small achievement. But the party has done much more than survive. It successfully transformed itself from movement to party in order to change from protest to governance. The same year, Henry Cotton, a British civil servant, published a book New India, or India in Transition. This book created quite a stir, and was highly spoken of by the times newspaper. It discussed the future that attends the Indian races and of the great Indian movement upon which, after the lapse of a quarter of a century public attention has been fixed but to which at that time men's eyes were blind. These volumes are not just a record of Congress speeches and resolutions, but they also capture the mental, emotional and political life of late nineteenth century India. They are, furthermore , a gallery of some leading individuals who contributed, with infinite patience and tenacity, to the evolution of an Indian nationality. Scores of books exist on the Indian National Congress. We have taken a different route to illuminate the birth of an idea that has captured the imagination of millions. This is probably the first authentic version of the Congress proceedings: earlier printed texts were either abridged or tampered with. Some reports were torn in parts: we have left those portion as they are. In some places the missing words have been added to make the text intelligible to the reader. (This series is expected to be complete in 12 Volumes).
