An important early study of Manet, illustrated with two original Manet etchings, "L'Odalisque Couchee" and "La Convelescente," as well as three etchings by M. H. Guérard after Manet, and six gravures. Both Manet etchings are nice, strong impressions. Inscribed to etcher and poster artist Ernest Haskell on the ffep as follows: "To Ernest Haskell from Mrs Evan Shipman." (Evan Shipman was a poet and writer mainly remembered as a close friend of Ernest Hemingway). CONDITION: Good, cloth soiled, spine browned, contents clean.

With three etching by Guerard after Manet, six heliogravure plates after Manet and numerous b/w illustrations. The etchings in very good condition with a few foxing marks outside the image.

This is the earliest biography of Édouard Manet [1832-1883], published nine months after his death. The author was a close personal friend. The two original etchings with aquatint by Manet, each on laid paper and on japon, are titled L Odalisque couchée (Harris 56) and La Convalescente (Harris 85, 3rd state).
