A Very Good copy. A sermon that was originally delivered on June 16, 1799 on the occasion of the passing of Increase Sumner (1746-1799), a lawyer, judge, and the 5th Governor of Massachusetts, on June 7, 1799. The sermon was given by Eliphalet Porter (1758-1833), the minister of the First Religious Society of Roxbury, Massachusetts. This is a sermon that eulogizes Sumner and addresses many aspects of death. Porter says that death takes lives indiscriminately regardless of age, character, or social position in life. He contrasts the status of Sumner as Governor or Chief Magistrate to that of the "private citizen" and says that death treats both as equals. Porter says further that no person can foresee their death and that it is better that way. He elaborate and reasons that if a person were to know their time of passing, their logical and moral faculties would succumb to that fear and knowledge and become corrupt. In a similar vein of thought, Porter also supposes that if a person were allowed to live forever, it would only lead to them committing evil and loving power and the earthly world. Beginning on Page 16, Porter summarizes the life of Sumner. He portrays him as a noble and virtuous man who was "polite and unassuming; yet dignified and manly." He briefly discusses Sumner's education, vocations as lawyer and judge, and his Christian beliefs. Porter visited Sumner at his deathbed and conveys that Sumner had become a Christian long before his final hours. Porter speaks more about death and bereavement and reassures listeners that one should accept divine providence in terms of when the moment of death arrives. Porter also makes a few statements encouraging the betterment of one's virtues and Christian life.
