  • Paris, Delaguette, Basan & Poignant, 1779 (-1786), four complete parts and the fifth part incomplete (of 8 parts published), bound in 2 vols in-4°, 29 x 24 cm, with 3 (of 5) engraved titles (2 colored), engraved dedication leaf with vignette, 3 engraved plates with catching equipment + 189 handcolored copper engraved plates (of 190; missing plate n°133). Contemporary half leather, sprinkled boards. Half-title & title with large cut outs (but apparently no loss of text), some light traces of use and thumbing with some scarce small stains. Horn-Sch. 6051. Nissen 1300. Carefully contemporary handcolored copy, almost without stains of one of the most beautiful butterfly books ever produced. The engravings were made by Juillet, Swebach, Gérardin, Ransonette after drawings by Desfontaines, Engramelle, Kraul a.o. The book was issued in installments in a very limited edition. (probably only 250 copies)The subscriber's list is printed in Part III and includes apart from royalty and nobility also scientists as Buffon, Bomare, Buchoz, Faujas de Saint-Fond etc. The complete work comprises VIII volumes and contains in all 351 plates. Its publishing history ran right through the French Revolution (from 1779-1792). Our copy runs until Part V page 35. (Exact collation can be provided upon request).
