The Pooles (Day, Widmark) have been trying to conceive for years, to no avail. They apply for adoption, and the sultry Ms. Novick (Scala) is assigned as their agent. Unfortunate events lead Ms. Novick to conclude the Pooles unfit for parenthood, but Mr. Poole is able to change her mind.
