252, (2)pp. 16 engraved plates by H. Anderson after Genin (4 folding). Sm. 4to. Publisher s red buckram (spine defective; covers detached). Groce and Wallace record that Genin (1822-1850), whose primary interest was in historical painting, was encouraged at an early age by Hugh Anderson, the engraver of the book. His primitivist compositions ("The Woman of Monterey," "The Death of Samson," "Jepthah s Daughter," and other subjects, as well as an eerie family portrait) convey a sense of mental disturbance. The book was privately published by Genin s father five years after the artist s death in Kingstown, Jamaica.
