Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. First Thus. Uncommon delightful 1940s Australian children's book with charming illustrations & colour plates. Written & illustrated by D.H. Gilmore. Includes colour frontispiece, plus all 5 additional colour plates, as issued. Also with several smaller b&w illustrations throughout (some full page). Dustjacket with wraparound artwork, also by D.H. Gilmore. From inner front flap of dustjacket (in full): "Gregory Grasshopper was a young and foolish insect who wouldn't listen to his friends when they warned him that winter was coming. He hopped and played about while wiser creatures were making cosy beds of moss or spinning blankets or storing food for the winter. Gregory hopped his way into so much trouble that at last he realized that he had been wrong, and when Antony Bumble the Bee rescued him from the clutches of Jack Frost he set to work with a will to build himself a house. This is a charming story by a favourite writer for children. It creates in vivid detail the miniature world of tiny creatures that is always so fascinating to young readers. The story is simply and entertainingly told, and is delightfully and profusely illustrated". Appears to be a First Edition, with "1947" to both title page & copyright page with no later reprint dates (Trove indicates two editions, 1942 & 1947; though apparently the text & illustrations differ in the two editions, so this copy FIRST EDITION THUS). Muir 2821. Printed in Australia by Halstead Press, Sydney. Bound in original light brown paper boards with dark brown lettering & design to front board & spine, in publisher's unclipped pictorial dustjacket. The dustjacket is now protected in a removable clear mylar cover. Slight handling wear, several small INK MARKS (with some words crossed out & minor marks to some of the colour and b&w illustrations & one word of frontispiece), former owner's ink name & price to ffep, faint old tape repair to head of dustjacket spine, otherwise despite the minor faults still a nice clean tight solid hardcover copy. 47pp. Scarce title in any edition. RARE. SB-13.

HARDCOVER with DUSTJACKET. Dustjacket with wraparound artwork, also by D.H. Gilmore. From inner front flap of dustjacket: "Catkin and Codlin are two little Silkworms with very good intentions. They set out for the Market Town to sell the fine silken thread spun by Mrs Silkworm. They have many adventures on the way but quite the most breath-taking is when they are immured in the deepest, darkest dungeon in Baron Bumblebee's Baronial Hall. This is a delightful story for the very young who will be able to recognize the characters from the book in the little creatures that they see for themselves in bush and garden; spider, bumblebees and cicadas. Catkin and Codlin leads the imagination of the child into that charming world where fantasy and reality go hand in hand".
