Book
Softcover. Condition: VG. White & puce & color illus. wraps, 48 pp., BW & color illus. Issued in conjunction with several 1987-1988 exhibitions of work by six artists. "A significant number of artists working today have integrated photography with the other visual arts. [This exhibition] selects from this increasingly diverse group six artists from Europe and America: James Casebere (New York), Bruce Charlesworth (Minneapolis), Bernard Faucon (Paris), Ron O'Donnell (Edinburgh), Sandy Skoglund (New York), and Boyd Webb (London). Their images, although highly individualistic, share decidedly enigmatic, even surrealistic qualities, juxtaposing the real with the artificial and generating dreamlike states of mind." (p. 4).

"In 'Jennifer Bartlett', Marge Goldwater has contributed a chronological survey of the paintings that discuss the polarities of control and passion -- the desire to master space, media, subject matter, and draftsmanship that are crucial aspects of the painter's art. In a richly illustrated article, New York art critic Roberta Smith discusses Bartlett's many architectural commissions. These remarkable installations range from a dining room in the home of British collectors to her work for Philip Johnson's AT&T Building. This handsomely designed volume also contains a captivating biographical sketch of this colorful and outspoken artist by the "New Yorker" writer Calvin Tomkins, who gives an account of Bartlett's background, education, artistic development, and character." - Publisher. CONTENTS: Foreword, by Martin Friedman; Drawing and painting, by Calvin Tomkins; Jennifer Bartlett: on land and at sea, by Marge Goldwater; Flooding the mind and eye: Jennifer Bartlett's commissions, by Roberta Smith.
