Self wrappers. First edition. 8 pp. 8vo. Charles Carroll Goodwin (1832-1917) was the editor of the Salt Lake Tribune and author of many books. He argues that without silver as money, "the great mass of workers will degenerate into peons, or in irresistible fury arise, and, through the horrors of revolution, first create chaos and then trust to bring out of that chaos a new creation." OCLC locates only four copies: University of California at Berkeley (2), Georgetown, and Northwestern. A very good copy, light soiling, small tear to fore edge, small marginal stain.
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 283 p. 8vo. 23 cm. Original blue cloth biding, lettered in gold, with a decorative Greek key border in black. Slightly worn at head and tail. The author was a newspaperman and the editor of the Salt L ake City Tribune. His style is a curious blend of the journalistic with the romantic. The scenes move easily between the Comstock Lode, England, and the mines of South Africa. The Comstock Lode was the group of celebrated silver and gold mines near Virginia City, Nevada. Between 1859-1870 it yielded well over 300 million tons of valuable ore. The profits made from the Lode accounted for much of the economic growth of the West in the late 19th century. Wright, American Fiction III (1876-1900), 2206. "The lust of gold, unfeeling and remorseless! The last corruption of degenerate man" -- Samuel Johnson (1749). **PRICE JUST REDUCED! All works have been trimmed and bound together in an "Emerson Binder" with internal clips and threaded needles intact. The boards are three-quarter black leather over pebbled black cloth. Gilt title, author, and volume on spine read: "Illumination Etc., IV, Kurtz." Presumably this was one of many works bound in a similar style by the previous owner, Charles M. Kurtz of New York. His bookplate, penned name, and stamp of gold skull and crossbones with - perhaps fraternity symbols? of Phi Delta Kappa surrounding it - on the front pastedown. His name also appears on preliminary leaves of several of the bound in books, along with different addresses and dates. A few sheets of lined notebook paper proceed the books. A hand written table of contents is present on the first page. Even toning to interior. Offsetting from leather turn-ins to to first and last few pages. Clean and bright overall. All pages including plates have been trimmed, in some cases affecting the edges of images or plate numbers. Chipping to cormers of several pages. Chalres McMeen Kurtz (1855 - 1909) was an American art critic, author, and museum curator. He studied at the National Academy of Design in New York City when he was using these books (based on the date of 1876 being written on the verso of the frontis of the heraldry book). Kurtz was involved with several major art exhibitions including the World's Columbian Exposition and Paris Exposition of 1900. ART/032323.

The Third Washington Conference (codenamed Trident) was held in Washington, D.C from May 12 to May 25, 1943. It was a World War II strategic meeting between the heads of government of the United Kingdom and the United States. On May 15, 1943 the Combined Chiefs of Staff (US and UK Military Leaders) travelled to Williamsburg, Virginia. On Sunday May 16, they attended a church service in Williamsburg, followed by lunch hosted by the Mayor of Williamsburg, before traveling back to Washington D.C. The following signatures can be found on the front end papers of this book (left to right, top to bottom): 1. Kenneth Chorley - President of Colonial Williamsburg 2. Vernon Geddy - Attorney, Executive Vice President of Colonial Williamsburg 3. Channing M. Hall - Mayor of Williamsburg, 1934 - 1947 4. Dudley Pound - First Sea Lord, Admiral of the Navy, Royal Navy 5. Charles F.A. Portal - Marshal of the Royal Air Force 6. Richard E.C. Peirse - Air Chief Marshal, Royal Air Force 7. James F. Merrill Pasco - Lieutenant Colonel, Aide to General Marshall 12. Frank McCarthy - Brigadier General, later Film Producer ('Patton') 13. Joseph T. McNarney - was a United States Army Air Forces / Air Force general officer who later served as Military Governor of occupied Germany The initials at the top are A.F.B. for Alan Francis Brooke, Field Marshal Alanbrooke. In a letter to Mrs. M.C.Long on June 23, 1955 Marshall describes the trip to Williamstown in 1943 as follows: ' I was most impressed of him as a guest of mine when I was entertaining the British Chiefs of Staff with Lord Wavell and his subordinate Chiefs at the restored, ancient Colonial Capital Village of Williamsburg, Virginia. Some swam (the Sea Lord Dudley Pound), some occupied themselves in photography (Lord Wavell), but Alanbrooke, with his field glasses, devoted his time to a study of the Virginia birds in that locality. His persistence and his pleasure in the task were very appealing. We had been having a very hard time in Washington reaching agreements, but the weekend in Williamsburg with no business discussions cleared the air entirely.' According to the official reports about this visit other guests at Williamsburg in May 1943 were Air Chief Marshal Charles Portal, chief of the British air staff; Admiral Sir James Somerville, commander in chief of the Eastern Fleet; and Lieutenant General Sir Hastings Ismay.
