Book
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 2 volume set. Both volumes attractively bound in three quarters leather: Maroon leather spines and corners with decorative cloth over boards. The bindings are a solid A for condition, with crisp raised cords, gold lettering and panels on the spine. Overall very good. Marbled endpapers. Title pages dated 1889. This is the first UK edition. 604 and 630 pages. Clean throughout. The binding is signed/stamped on the endpaper L. Broca. Lucien Broca was a bookbinder of note, working in London for the final quarter of the 19th century. According to previous owner of this set, Broca may be best known as the ghost-binder for Sarah Prideaux, whose name seems to have appeared on many of his bindings. His name appears here and there in directories of London bookbinders until 1901. Please email with questions or to request photos.
