    Hardcover. folio. 34.5cm, 196p., PLUS 36 full page plate illustrations engraved on heavy stock paper, and 51 illustrations in the text, in the original royal blue pebbled cloth, gilt decoration & title on upper board, gilt spine titles, a.e.g., spine edges worn and top and bottom spine edges chipped, otherwise a very good internally fine copy (art). ~ Volume 8 of the British art periodical first launched in 1879 by English writer and art critic, Philip Gilbert Hamerton (1834 1894). "The Portfolio" was published from 1870 to 1893 and was a very influential in the Victorian art community. Volume 8 features reproductions from the Althorp Gallery (Rubens, Rembrandt, Reynolds, Murillo, Gainsborough) and National Gallery (Lawrence, Stanfield, Greuze, Carucci, Jardin, Reynolds). Hamerton contributions include essays on Poynter, Turner, Wyld, and Belgian etchings. A major essay is by Sidney Colvin "Albert Durer: His Teachers, His Rivals, and His Followers". An impressive volume of a seminal British art periodical.
