Hard Cover. Condition: Very Good Minus. Reprint. Hardcover, 12mo (5 x 7 1/2 inches), in red cloth with black title lettering, (3), 304 pp. Very Good Minus, spine lightly sunned, slightly cocked, tanning, light corner rubbing. Hinges are intact. Inscribed in old ink with owner's name, dated 1913. An English reprint of the 1910 first edition introducing the consulting detective and reformed criminal mastermind, Hamilton Cleek, known as the "Man of the Forty Faces" for his skills at disguise. Part homage to Arthur Conan Doyle and part dime novel, this work was based on a series of short stories serialized by the author in the pulp fiction line and influenced later crime writers such as John Dickson Carr and Ellery Queen. The Author, T.W. Hanshew (1857-1914) was an American born in Brooklyn, NY, later resettling to London. His early vocation as an actor comes through in the dramatic energy of the action in these exciting stories, some of which were made into silent movies. A really fun read! Hubin 186.
