Shawe is the author of Gold-bearing Polymetallic Veins and Replacement Deposits (1989); Introduction to geology and resources of gold, and geochemistry of gold; etc. From his obituary on the SME website: "Daniel Reeves Shawe, 92, of Lakewood, Colorado was an SME member and had a 44-year career as a geologist for the U.S. Geological Survey. Dan was born in Gardnerville, Nevada, on May 24, 1925, and grew up in this same small town, located in the Carson Valley just east of the Sierra Nevada Mountains Dan received his higher education at Stanford University, obtaining a B.S. in geology in 1949, an M.S. in geology in 1950, and a Ph.D. in geology in 1953. In June of 1951, he embarked on a rewarding career as a field geologist for the U.S. Geological Survey, eventually mapping and studying mineral resources in many areas of the western United States, as well as in several foreign countries Initially, Dan was stationed in Grand Junction, Colorado; however, in 1958, at the conclusion of the Colorado Plateau Uranium Program, he transferred to the Denver USGS office. He retired in January of 1995, continuing on into his 80s, as a Scientist Emeritus, completing reports related to his earlier field work. Specific projects in which Dan was involved over the course of his career included thorium reconnaissance and geologic mapping at Mountain Pass, California (1951-52); uranium exploration in the Slick Rock district of the Colorado Plateau (1953-58); geologic mapping in the Egan Range, Nevada (1958-60); mapping beryllium in volcanic rocks in the western U.S. (1961-65); serving as Chief of the Heavy Metals Branch (1966-69) and the Branch of Central Mineral Resources (1970-72); completing geologic studies of the Great Basin (1973-74); holding a temporary-duty assignment in Thailand, as well as preparing a report on the 'Geology and Mineral Resources of Thailand' and geologic mapping in the southern Toquima Range, Nevada (1974-95). In June of 1967, Dan and his colleague Barney Poole discovered large, high-grade deposits of bedded barite in East Northumberland Canyon in the northern Toquima Range. Dan received special recognition for his work both from the university he attended and from his geologist peers throughout his career; his awards included a B.S. with Great Distinction from Stanford in 1949 and the Federal Meritorious Service Award from the USGS in 1972.". In 1931, he studied Japanese and traveled to Japan to teach English until 1934, he married a Japanese woman. He served as Managing Director of the British Library of Information and Culture in Tokyo in 1941. With the outbreak of World War II, he was held in Sugamo prison for six months, then was returned to England. At the time of his repatriation all of his book collection and 383 belonging to the British Museum were seized under the Enemy Property Administration Law. They were later purchased by Keio University through the Mitsui Trust Company. Upon return to England, Hawley was a lecturer in Japanese at London University and was also involved in establishing the Japanese Language Section of the BBC.1 After that, he worked for the British Foreign Office. . 1946-1961 In February 1946, Hawley joined The Times, and in July that year he left for an assignment in Japan as its special correspondent. In 1952, he moved to Yamashina in Kyoto and devoted his time entirely to research work and writing. At the time of his death on 10 January 1961, he had published two books at his own expense. *** HISTORY OF THE HAWLEY COLLECTION OF BOOKS: During his first ten years in Japan, he collected more than 16,000 books. When Hawley returned to Japan after the war, he made a great effort to get back those books and successfully retrieved most of his collection. Fortunately, details of this affair were put on record so we can find approximate numbers of the books seized and all the names of the books returned to him. Under the application of the Enemy Property Administration Law, Hawley's collection was entrusted to the Mitsui Trust Company, as Civil Property Custodian on 27 August 1942. It was sold to Keio University Library for about 60,000 yen on 10 May 1943. On 4 November of the same year, Toshiko, Hawley's wife, wrote a letter to the Swiss Legation which represented British interests during the war, and asked them to preserve all the books. The letter gave details of his collection as follows: . Materia Medica Papermaking Japanese language Botany Fauna and flora Early Christianity in Japan Japanese cultural history A special collection dealing with the Loochiu Island [Okinawa] Religion Architecture China (mostly linguistic) Art Dictionaries and general linguistic material Bibliographical material Noh drama A special collection dealing with Mongolia and Manchukuo The letter indicated total number of volumes approximately 21,000, of which some 1,500 are in European languages (mostly English and French), the remainder being in Japanese and Chinese. Furthermore, a letter written by Hawley himself dated 15 September 1946 and addressed to the Civil Property Custodian, contained thirteen claims and listed the following number of books: . "When, after my release from Sugamo prison (July 29, 1942), I left Japan for England on July 30, 1942, I was compelled to leave behind in my house at 45 Minami-cho, Go-chome, Aoyama, Akasakaku, Tokyo, my collection of European, Japanese and Chinese books, amounting to some 1,470 European items (in some 2,630 volumes) and some 3,261 Japanese and Chinese items (in some 15,000 volumes). The part which was not seized consists of some 207 European items and some 554 Japanese Chinese items, amounting in all to some 1,600 volumes." . According to an agreement concluded on 1 July 1949 between Hawley and the Japanese government, the number of books Hawley ultimately retrieved was as follows: . Japanese and Chinese books: 2,483 titles, 1 0,835 volumes Japanese and Chinese incomplete volumes: 91 titles; 1,933 volumes damaged Japanese and Chinese books: 14 titles; 26 volumes Japanese and Chinese books not returned: 11 titles; 23 volumes Western books: 438 titles; 748 volumes incomplete Western volumes: 7 titles; 22 volumes damaged Western books: 1 title; 1 volume Western books not returned: 7 titles; 8 volumes Total 2,919 titles 11,571 volumes . In short, the Library which Frank Hawley left in Japan when he was repatriated comprised 3,261 titles, about 15,000 volumes of Japanese books' and '1,470 titles about 2,630 volumes of Western books'. Of these, 2,707 titles of Japanese books and 1,263 titles of Western ones, totaling 16.

Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. Printed privately for the author 4to (9 x 12in - 23 x 31 cm), brown boards, printed on handmade paper, limited to 100 numbered copies, 1 plate, 33 pp. This is a printed extract of a manuscript journal kept by Dr. John T. Comerford. It contains one plate which is a facsimile of a page from the journal. The editor first discusses Dr. Comerford's role as an Assistant Surgeon aboard HMS Conqueror and the contents of his log (pages 1-13). The actual log (pages 14-33) runs from the beginning of September, 1863 through February 1, 1866. It covers the inbound and outbound journey as well as his stay in Japan. Comerford arrived in Japan on May 28, 1864 and departed on August 24, 1865. This spans the period when the British bombarded Shimonoseki in retaliation for the killing of a British subject, Charles L. Richardson. The bombardment is covered in detail. The journal also discusses the "Gankiro" which was a brothel in Yokohama designated for foreigners. Comerford's journal is a unique first hand account from the perspective of a foreign sailor in Japan during this very turbulent period as an anti-foreigner power struggle to "expel the barbarians" was in full process in Japan. The limitation statement (#79 of 100 copies) is found at the back of the book and is on a paste on label which is entirely in Japanese. ~ Condition. The book is in Very Good condition. The contents are very clean and free of faults. The covers have heavy wear along the edges, corners and spine. There are also scrapes on the boards. A paste on label on the spine gives the title. The dust jacket is G+ (damaged area front middle, pieces missing head and foot of spine and along edges).
