First edition. First edition. Boards, 115pp., frontis, biblio. A surveyor by profession, Hays was commissioned by the Republic of Texas to make surveys of the frontier. In the late 1830's and 1840's Hays performed double duty as both a surveyor and a Texas Ranger. He quickly gained notoriety for his leadership and bravery as an "Indian Fighter". During the war with Mexico, Hays led the 1st Regiment of the Texas Mounted Volunteers in battle at Monterey and Mexico City. Returning he led a gold rush expedition to California where he remained until his death in 1883. A fine copy in price-clipped, near fine dust jacket.
