The main part of each volume was Ellis's seriealized novel, Self-Deception; or, The History of a Human Heart. Interspersed with the novel were poems, essays, and random thoughts from Mrs. Ellis along with very nice engravings. The Brontes were known to have read Ellis's work.

Publisher's original white silk water marked folder with gilt illustration and lettering to the front cover. The folder contains portraits of the show's characters in coloured solio-chrome plates in full stage costume. Title page with portraits of the show's writer, H. J. W. Dam, the producer, George Edwardes, and the composer of the music, Ivan Caryll. Folio loose in folder 13½'' x 10¼'' which contains 11 plates plus the title page plate. The Solio-chrome process was carried out by by Waterlow and Sons of London, with the negative photographs taken by Alfred Ellis. Cracking and soiling to the spine edges of the folder, the plates have very light thumb marks to the margins, without any tears or chips to the plates. Member of the P.B.F.A. STAGE & THEATRE.

Sarah Stickney Ellis (1799 -1872), also known as Sarah Ellis was a Quaker turned Congregationalist. Her writings are mainly focused on women's role in society, moral education, and moral improvement. (Her husband was William Ellis the missionary). "The Morning Call" includes her novel " 'Self Deception, or The History of a Human Heart", serialised across the four volumes, as well as a variety of essays and poems. All are illustrated with steel engravings after drawings by H. Warren and L. Hicks.
