Hardcover. Condition: Good. Ex-lib with usual markings. Green cloth covers with heavy wear, fraying and bumping on corners and spine ends. Gold lettering on spine and front cover is bright. Light bumping to top and bottom edges. Light shelf wear and soiling to covers. Inside front hinge is cracked but still firmly attached. Light yellowing to page ends and text due to age. Text is otherwise clean and unmarked. The author tells his story of growing up and living in the South as a black man. Starting with his first school which was a mission school in 1878. He details the changing education and political system in the South. Chapters on suffrage, lynchings, and fair employment practices. Holley has written a full page inscription to Mayor M W Tift of Albany georgia where Holley lived and taught. A warm inscription "to M W Tift who as Mayor of Albany.was one of the best friends and helpers of the Negroes in Southwest Georgia. He may be said to have rendered more service to me in building a college for my people than any other one person for which I am grateful" The mayor has pasted the dust jacket to the preliminary pages. Scarce thus.

The dw has suffered badly from the depredations of fish moths (see image) but the red boards with gilt titling are clean and undamaged. There is a long, warm and revealing inscription dd May 10 1955 on the ffep to CR Swart (later to be appointed the first State President of the Republic of South Africa in 1961) along with Swart's rubber stamp. Loosely inserted is a 4pp. A4 typescript in which Holley discusses the reception of his book and his hopes for it. 112pp unmarked apart from pen marks in the margin and underlining by Swart to pp. 98-100. Frontis b/w. Binding fine. An exceptionally scarce title and an interesting association copy. Inscribed by Author(s).
