Hardcover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. Unfolding against a colorful nineteenth-century background, moving from the frivolous society gatherings of England at the time of the Crimean War to the public soup kitchens of an America torn by social and economic unrest-this is the story of a young Englishwoman and the life she chose, a life radically different from the one into which she was born. When Florence Nightingale was making superhuman efforts against neglect and disease in the Crimea, Julie Corper was a well-bred, frail girl growing up in Victorian London. It was not until Julie met Phillip McManus, a penniless young playwright, that she realized that outside her own tight world, art and adventure beckoned. Confused, yet deeply stirred by Phillip's intense rebellion against what she had always considered the natural order of things. Julie fell promptly and desperately in love with him. But Phillip's ultimatum that she forsake the warm and sold shelter of home and family to accompany him to a new, uncertain life in America came too soon, and Julie let that chance at life escape her. When her second chance came in the form of young Leon Dekker, just back from the East Indies, she took it, married him, and followed him to America where she knew life would never be rich and easy again. America was good to Julie in its way, but never kind. It showed her the rough and poor sides of New York and Chicago, here Leon became absorbed in a mass of men striving toward the goal of better treatment and working conditions for the workingman. Interwoven with the theme of Julie's two loves, very different in their emotional content, are brilliant and intimate pictures of times both turbulent and refined-of lavish Christmas parties in well-to-do London, of picnics and summer dances in Holland, of the factories of England and the Haymarket riots of Chicago, and of the growing American theater.
