Pamphlet. [2], 9 p. (closely set.in quarto format); 20.5 cm. `It is hard, at least on first impressions, to avoid a feeling of disappointment at the apparent contrast between Isaiah, Amos, Jeremiah and other OT giants and the showing put up by the christian prophets strictly so-called. This is, of course, partly because we have, under the influence of 19th century criticism, a very inflated idea of what the OT prophets were actually like as human figures. We forget too how very odd some of the prohets were -- quite as odd as anything thrown up by African enthusi- astic sects in our own time: Ezekiel lying on his side for months on end or breaking out of his own house with pots and pans tied all over him, Isaiah walking naked for three years. And the biblical prophets were only a tiny minority.most prophets prophesied for money, like fortune-tellers. An objective view might see much less difference than we usually do between the prophets of the two covenants.' (6) -- `the OT prophets went wrong. notably in two respects. First, though they correctly saw the nation as sinful and worthy of judgment, they mostly saw that judgment as coming much sooner than in fact it did. The second point at which the OT prophets went astray was,as we saw, then they came to predict happiness for the righteous. At the individual level, which is where it really matters, there is no justice.' (7 f.) -- We can never stop at righteousness because we find that the doing of it inevitably involves us in something more, forgiveness, sacrificial love, suffering, the surrender of those rights which under righteousness are our own. Justice is possible only among men of goodwill.' Good, stapled, in orig. red on tan wrapper.
