JONES, J[ohn] B. A Rebel War Clerk's Diary at the Confederate States Capital. Philadelphia: J. B. Lippincott & Co., 1866. 1st ed. 2 Vols. 8vo. 392; 480 pp. Orig. cloth. Despite very light rubbing to the extremities, this remains a very nice copy. Small separating to the front endpaper of volume one, but the hinge remains solid. Small labels on the front pastedown of both volumes, else clean throughout. A very good set or better, uncommon in this condition. HOWES J-220. Harwell writes, "Jones was a journeyman author and newspaper man whose strong Southern sympathies impelled him to leave New Jersey in early April 1861 and head south. He consciously set out to be the Confederate Pepys and would have succeeded had he been able to resist inserting small emendations into his diary when it was being prepared for publication" In Tall Cotton, 104, Nevins calls this the "most consulted journal for wartime Richmond and the Confederate government; Jones, who reworked the diary shortly after the war, had and exaggerated opinion of his military judgments" Nevins I, p.115. He goes on a subsequent entry to call it "An interesting commentary on life and people in the Confederacy, but marred by the author's strong prejudices and his editing of the narrative after the events described" Nevins II, p.173.
