Hardcover. 8vo. Burgundy cloth with gilt spine lettering, pictorial price-clipped dust jacket. vi, 115pp. Near fine/very good. Jacket edgeworn, with a few edge chips along top. A tight, quite nice first edition of this gathering of eight essays by noted Civil War scholars that includes Don E. Fehrenbacher, David M. Potter, Avery O. Craven, Robert W. Johannsen. This copy bears a choice autograph addition, being extra-illustrated with a Typed Letter Signed from Roy F. Nichols (who contributes "Why the Democratic Party Divided" to this volume) tipped to the leaf facing the title page, 1p, 8½" X 11", Philadelphia, PA, 4 April 1961. Addressed to Arnold F. Gates (1914-93, noted Lincoln/Civil War scholar). Near fine. On "University of Pennsylvania" letterhead listing Nichols as vice-provost and dean, he chats cordially with Gates (officer with the New York Civil War Round Table) about his upcoming visit to NYC, which Gates apparently arranged -- likely Nichols was a guest speaker for this Round table. Signed boldly in full in blue ballpoint. Nichols (1896-1973) was an American historian best known for his 1948 Pulitzer Prize winner, "The Disruption of American Democracy.".
