First Edition
Unbound. Condition: Near Fine. Thirty-five issues: Vol. 1, Nos. 9-25; Vol. 2, Nos. 1 and 3-11; Vol. 3, Nos. 1-7. Quartos. Issued as one page (18 issues), four pages (10 issues) or eight pages (six issues). Also includes three film handbills or small broadsides for films presented by Bill Landis at Club 57: *White Slaves*, *The Laughing Woman*, and *The Life of Burr*. Handbills and multi-page issues illustrated. Old horizontal folds, occasional light creasing, one issue printed on newsprint with a stamp and address label, near fine. A significant run of the original fanzine of the 42nd Street grindhouse movie scene, with three handbills for screenings put on by Landis. Landis was a fixture in "The Deuce" not only as a cinephile but also a bisexual adult film star and sometimes-escort. In the *Sleazoid Express*, he cheekily reviews movies with titles like *Bloodeaters*, *Schizo* ("another bad *Psycho* xerox"), *Thundercrack!* and *Blood Beach*â "titles taken from just the first few issues. Landis expanded the size of his newsletter throughout its run from one to four to eight pages, eventually including graphics. And for all the celebration of gore and smut, there is also a critical element involved; many films are (pardon the expression) cut to pieces. One article is titled "Please! No More *Halloween*s!," and Vol. 1 No. 15 is dedicated to The Year in Sleaze, rating 1980 movies from Best (*Lucifer Rising* and *Shogun Assassin*, among others) to Musts to Avoid (*Stone Cold Dead*, *Driller Killer*, *The Octagon*, etc.). Landis's rag on the grimy goings-on in Midtown have spawned at least two books: *Sleazoid Express: A Mind-Twisting Tour Through the Grindhouse Cinema of Times Square*, written by Landis and Michelle Clifford and published by Simon and Schuster, and a 2021 biography by Preston Fassel: *Landis: The Story of a Real Man on 42nd Street*. A significant run of this now-legendary grindhouse zine; even single issues appear to be very uncommon.
