Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Fair. First Edition. pp xii, 270. Some edge-wear to dust-jacket - otherwise in very good condition. 'To many fellow Irishmen. Sheehy-Skeffington (1878-1916) was an eccentric and a misfit. Though a journalist by profession, his true vocation was crusading for unpopular causes: the emancipation of women, socialism, pacifism, and Irish nationalism. He was also a tee-totaler, a nonsmoker, a vegetarian, and an antivivisectionist. Bearded, dressed in his tweed knickerbocker suits, and waring a large button reading "Votes for Women", Sheehy-Skeffington was a familiar sight in Dublin . Francis Sheehy-Skeffington, who never wavered in his belief that every problem could be solved nonviolently, was to meet his death as the victim of violence. On the second day of the Easter Rising, having attempted to organize a civilian patrol to control looting in Dublin, he was arrested by the British military. The following morning, without a semblance of trial or hearing, he was placed before a firing squad. His death sent shockwaves throughout Ireland.'.

The Four Seasons of Mary Lavin stands as the first full portrayal of the author's life: the story of a woman who was able single-handedly to support and rear three daughters and at the same time carve a niche for herself in the literary life of Dublin. She served as a model for women writers of the period for whom winning recognition was painfully slow.
