From the book's Publisher's Note, "This is the tale of the gallant Swedish expedition to rescue the officers and crew of the Italia, the Italian dirigible that came to grief on the northern ice in May, 1928. The aviator's dramatic adventures here are related by himself, and the circumstances out of which they arose, will be more fully understood upon reference to the brief outline of the Italia's career as printed at the end of the book.".
