Bender, John B. / Marrinan, Michael. The culture of diagram. Stanford, Calif.: Stanford University Press, 2010, xvii, 265pp., large PAPERBACK, very good. briefly INSCRIBED with much affection to two recipients with first names only and SIGNED with an initial which looks like a "J" (for John?). "The Culture of Diagram is about visual thinking. Exploring a terrain where words meet pictures and formulas meet figures, the book foregrounds diagrams as tools for blurring those boundaries to focus on the production of knowledge as process. It outlines a history of convergence among diverse streams of data in real-time: from eighteenth-century print media and the diagrammatic procedures in the pages of Diderot's Encyclopedia to the paintings of Jacques-Louis David and mathematical devices that reveal the unseen worlds of quantum physics. Central to the story is the process of correlation, which invites observers to participate by eliciting leaps of imagination to fill gaps in data, equations, or sensations. This book traces practices that ran against the grain of both Locke's clear and distinct ideas and Newton's causality practices greatly expanded by the calculus, probabilities, and protocols of data sampling., Today's digital technologies are rooted in the ability of high-speed computers to correct errors when returning binary data to the human sensorium. High-tech diagrams echo the visual structures of the Encyclopedia, arraying packets of dissimilar data across digital spaces instead of white paper. The culture of diagram broke with the certainties of eighteenth-century science to expand the range of human experience. Speaking across disciplines and discourses, Bender and Marrinan situate our modernity in a new and revealing light". ISBN 9780804745055.

Founded the Inchbald School of Interior Design in 1960, extending this to a Faculty in Garden Design in 1972. Interior design was flourishing in America as a respected adjunct to architecture. When Bill Pahlmann, one of the most talented and successful exponents of the US interior design industry visited London with a number of fellow decorators in about 1958 he expressed horror that there was neither a training centre or profession body. Following an impassioned lecture from Bill, I resolved to fill the gaps and started Inchbald in 1960. In 1962 I invited the senior exponents of interior design to come together, including David Hicks, (trained as a painter) John Siddeley (once an actor) and Jon Bannenberg (once a child prodigy concert pianist), to discuss the possibility of forming a professional association. The fourth member of this group was, of course, Michael Inchbald, my husband and an architect. However they failed to come to any constructive conclusions so the idea lay dormant for a year or two. It was subsequently revived by a businessman, Godfrey Bonsack, who ensured the Association rose like a phoenix from the muddle, and in due course became the respected British Institute of Interior Designers. The foundation in 1960 of the Inchbald set the pace for the structured education and training of Interior Designers and Decorators and indeed gave rise to further successful educational centres.
