Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. xxvii, 400 pp, list of b&w illustrations, introduction, The Correspondence: 25 December 1778 - 22 January 1818, index. Edited and Translated by James F. Marshall First Edition, 1968. "In the course of her lifelong devotion to literature, politics, an cultivation of sentiment in the fervent style peculiar to the Leate eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, Germaine de Stael accumulated a large, varied circle of friends, among them Pierre Samuel du Pont de Nemours, the French economist and entrepreneur, one of those who engaged her affection. The author has compiled this document of Revolutionary affairs, spanning the years 1778-1818, from the letters, drafts, and copies preserved, including letters from Jacques Necker, du Pont's sons, de Stael's lawyers, as well as those from the principals. The correspondence presents a remarkable picture of economics, of literary life, and of two exceptionally cultivated and charming individuals. The author presents the originals alongside his urbane translations, which capture much of the flavor of these two 'sensitive souls' so typical of the early nineteenth century. There are glimpses of Mme. de Stael's long struggle to be allowed to return to Paris from political exile, of her travels in Germany and Italy, and of the composition of Corinne, as well as snatches of worldly gossip and sketches of her private life. Du Pont's side of the correspondence, while presenting a portrait of the financier in action, also touches on current events in America: the opening of the West, the Louisiana Purchase, Federal politics, piracy, and rumblings of war." from the jacket flap. Price clipped. Only the slightest wear to dj, else, Pristine, no wear. Clean, tight and strong binding with no underlining, highlighting or marginalia. Black cloth with silver lettering to spine.
