Melton (1891-1981) was a journalist and historian from Boonville, Missouri. He was active on the Missouri State Board of Education plus served on several Missouri Press Associations and Guilds. Towboat Pilot was published by the Caldwell, Idaho firm Caxton Press in 1948 and tells the story in fictional form of life of a Towboat Pilot. Includes black and white photos and illustrations. Kirkus Review (below) strongly implies the book needed a stronger editor. It would be a fun project to compare the manuscript with the final product and possibly would be a good learning tool in editing. "A very long, frequently tedious account with much good material which might have been exceptional if the blue pencil had been judiciously employed. The story of Tom Briggs, who from boyhood on the Gasconade River, wanted to work on boats. His struggle with his stepfather, his difficulties as a prankster and "bad boy", his many adventures on the teeming, busy river --through to young manhood and a happy fulfillment as a towboat pilot." Melton also wrote "The First Hundred Years" a history of Boonville's Thespian Hall and "Quick Darkness". University of Kansas holds some of Melton's papers.
